Former Nauset soccer star Abdel Talabi’s unexpected journey to becoming a fully fledged MLS professional player

Abdel Talabi, a former Nauset soccer standout, experienced an unforgettable moment when Inter Miami CF selected him 30th overall in the first round of the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. On December 18, while at his Smithfield apartment near Bryant University with teammates, Talabi watched the online draft unfold through a live tracker. His teammates on campus discovered his selection first and called to excitedly tell him about Miami’s pick before he could refresh his own screen and see the news.

Unlike major professional sports drafts held in arenas before crowds, the MLS SuperDraft occurs entirely online. Talabi and his peers tracked the event via mlssoccer.com and social media updates. Once he confirmed the selection, he immediately contacted his parents, Bola Talabi and Amy Harbeck, to share the news. Inter Miami Chief Soccer Officer Alberto Marrero then reached out personally to congratulate him, prompting Talabi to respond with determination and gratitude.

Talabi completed a six-year collegiate career at Bryant, accumulating numerous honors including All-Star, All-State, and All-American designations, plus Massachusetts Player of the Year. Despite his impressive resume, even he struggled to believe the professional opportunity had materialized. He expressed that years of dedication to soccer finally resulted in recognition from an MLS organization, realizing that the truly challenging work was about to begin.

A significant obstacle emerged during his sophomore year when Talabi suffered a severe Achilles tendon tear, forcing him to miss spring training and his entire junior season. The recovery process lasted twelve grueling months, during which doubt frequently clouded his mindset. However, Talabi committed fully to rehabilitation, celebrating incremental progress and maintaining focus on small achievable goals. His determination through this adversity ultimately enabled him to return for the 2023-24 season, starting all but one remaining game.

Talabi’s high school coach at Nauset, John McCully, wept upon learning of his former player’s draft selection. McCully praised Talabi as a “winner and dominator” who worked harder than any other player he coached. As a freshman starter, Talabi helped lead Nauset to state championships in 2016 and 2018, compiling an remarkable 83-3-1 record. McCully noted Talabi’s exceptional composure and decision-making ability with the ball distinguished him from his peers.

Beyond game performance, Talabi invested in continuous skill development during offseasons, researching drills online and working independently or in small groups to refine specific techniques. His 2016 state championship teammates were inducted into Nauset’s Hall of Fame in November, and when news of Talabi’s MLS selection reached their group chat nineteen days later, immediate enthusiasm erupted, with teammates expressing eagerness to purchase his Inter Miami jersey.

As Talabi prepares for Inter Miami’s preseason camps in January and February, where he will compete for roster consideration on a team featuring Lionel Messi, he reflects on his unconventional path to professional soccer. Talabi emphasizes prioritizing team success, trusting that individual accomplishments will naturally follow. His journey demonstrates that sustained commitment, resilience through injury, and collaborative focus can transform professional aspirations into reality.
