Rangers pursue dual January signings as they move for Rommens and Chukwuani in ambitious transfer window push

Manager Danny Rohl has intensified Rangers’ recruitment efforts by submitting a £3million bid for Belgian left-back Tuur Rommens from Westerlo. The club had previously identified Rommens as a key target to strengthen the squad during the second half of the season. Westerlo’s boss Issame Charai, who previously assisted at Ibrox, expressed his wish to keep the player, but Rangers have now made their formal approach.

The left-back position has been a concern for Rangers, with Jayden Meghoma operating as the sole established option in recent months. Alternative candidates like James Penrice from Hearts were considered unlikely targets, particularly following his recent transfer to AEK Athens. Addressing defensive depth remains a priority for the recruitment team.

Rangers have also lodged a £4million offer for Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani. The 22-year-old midfielder represents one of several options being evaluated to fill the defensive midfield role, alongside other players such as Silas Andersen from FC Hacken and Jens Hjerto-Dahl from Tromso. Negotiations with the Austrian club have commenced, and Chukwuani’s absence from Sturm Graz’s friendly against Club Brugge suggests active discussions.

Rohl outlined his transfer strategy, emphasizing the club’s clarity on required positions and player profiles needed for tactical implementation. New signings will require time to understand the team’s pressing system and playing philosophy. The manager acknowledged that additional squad members for upcoming cup matches could provide valuable integration opportunities while reducing immediate pressure for Premier League competition.

Rangers have confirmed their commitment to active recruitment throughout January without finalizing any deals yet. Following their recent victory over Aberdeen, the club moved into second place in the Premiership standings. Club officials stress that careful planning and strategic recruitment remain ongoing priorities as the window progresses, with potential late opportunities potentially emerging.
