Nathan Patterson faces an uncertain future at Everton as the club prepares for January transfer activity. The Scottish defender has earned only three Premier League appearances this season under David Moyes, with his playing time severely limited. Even when Seamus Coleman suffered injury, Jake O’Brien was deployed at right-back rather than Patterson, underscoring how far down the squad hierarchy he has fallen.
Everton’s plans to recruit a new starting right-back during the winter window appear to signal the end of Patterson’s time at the club. Moyes is actively seeking defensive reinforcements to address a position that has troubled his squad throughout the campaign. The club is prepared to allow Patterson a loan exit to boost his chances of World Cup selection with Scotland, though this move cannot happen immediately.
Patterson’s departure will be delayed until after the Africa Cup of Nations concludes later this month because Everton currently lacks adequate cover at right-back. Sevilla from Spain maintains interest in the 24-year-old, having pursued him during the previous transfer window. Italian clubs Lazio and Bologna are also monitoring his availability, with his current Everton contract running through June 2027.
Regarding potential arrivals, Everton have identified Genk’s Zakaria El Ouahdi as a target for the right-back position. The Moroccan international represents a key option, though Crystal Palace poses competitive pressure for his signature. At approximately £12 million, El Ouahdi would address Moyes’ defensive needs, but Everton must act decisively to complete negotiations ahead of their rivals.
O’Brien’s recent substandard performances have intensified the urgency for reinforcement at right-back. The club recognizes that addressing this vulnerable area cannot be postponed further, making January recruitment critical for Everton’s season prospects.
