Ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri admits bewilderment over mysterious £11million signing he cannot identify at all

Maurizio Sarri openly admitted unfamiliarity with Lazio’s new acquisition Petar Ratkov. The Italian club invested eleven million pounds to secure the twenty-two-year-old Serbian forward from Red Bull Salzburg. During a press conference, the former Chelsea manager, aged sixty-five, expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the player.

Sarri explained his position by noting that monitoring every player across all leagues proves impossible for a manager. He acknowledged that other club personnel likely possessed greater familiarity with Ratkov than himself. The coach further justified his unfamiliarity by stating he lacks the capacity to consistently observe the Austrian league where Salzburg competes.

The manager highlighted the necessity of extensive scouting networks in professional football. Lazio maintains a smaller recruitment team compared to his time at Chelsea. He pointed out that Chelsea employed thirty scouts, whereas most clubs typically maintain seven or eight. This structural difference explains gaps in a manager’s personal knowledge of emerging talent.

Despite Sarri’s indifference toward him, Ratkov expressed enthusiasm about joining Lazio and working under the Italian tactician. The striker called Sarri an excellent coach crucial for young player development. He mentioned consulting with former Lazio player Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who provided positive recommendations about the club and city. Ratkov set ambitious targets including maintaining fitness, scoring prolifically, and helping the club secure a top-six finish in Serie A.

Ratkov’s recent record at Salzburg demonstrates promising potential. He scored twelve goals across twenty-nine appearances last season. Over his entire tenure with the Austrian club beginning in twenty-twenty-three, he accumulated twenty-two goals from ninety-nine total matches. Lazio currently sit ninth in the Serie A standings under Sarri’s management during his second appointment with the club.
