Manchester United blocked a last-minute transfer deal that would have sent left-back Tyrell Malacia to Turkish club Besiktas. The player was preparing to board a flight to Istanbul on Monday when director of football Jason Wilcox intervened and halted the move.
The decision to recall Malacia came amid a severe shortage of available left-backs at Old Trafford. Patrick Dorgu sustained a hamstring injury during United’s 3-2 victory against Arsenal, with interim manager Michael Carrick indicating the Danish defender would miss several matches. Teenage prospect Harry Amass is also sidelined following a training ground incident while on loan at Norwich.
With Luke Shaw representing the only fully fit left-back option, United determined that allowing Malacia’s departure would leave them dangerously understaffed in that position. The club prioritized squad depth over facilitating an exit for a player who had barely featured this season.
Malacia’s involvement with United has been minimal, comprising just one appearance this campaign—a two-minute substitute stint against Newcastle on Boxing Day. He remained an unused substitute in thirteen other league matches. The defender has struggled to gain meaningful playing time during his Old Trafford tenure since arriving from Feyenoord in July 2022.
Over his time at United, injuries have severely hampered his development, forcing him to miss approximately seventy matches. In total, he has made forty-eight appearances across all competitions, with thirty-four being starts. His limited action this season left him available for a loan move, but squad necessities ultimately prevented his departure to Besiktas, who currently sit fifth in the Turkish Super Lig.
