Martin O’Neill, Celtic’s interim manager, has stated he does not intend to remain in the position beyond this season. The 73-year-old has made his future intentions clear during a recent broadcast discussion, clarifying that a permanent role at the club does not align with his plans moving forward.
O’Neill previously arrived at Celtic as an emergency appointment following the departures of Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy. He has stabilized the club during a critical period, with Celtic now engaged in a competitive title race against Hearts and Rangers. The team plays Aberdeen on Wednesday with the opportunity to narrow the gap on league leaders.
Alan Brazil, a prominent Celtic supporter and broadcast personality, expressed disappointment upon hearing O’Neill’s comments about not wanting the job permanently. Brazil felt the manager should have avoided making such a statement at this stage of the season, preferring that O’Neill delay any decision until the campaign concludes.
Ally McCoist robustly defended O’Neill’s honesty and transparency. The Rangers legend argued that criticizing the manager for providing a straightforward answer contradicted the principle of appreciating truthfulness. McCoist emphasized that O’Neill had answered a direct question candidly and deserved recognition for that integrity rather than criticism.
McCoist suggested that O’Neill’s response was precisely what he expected, noting that the manager has performed admirably with the team despite the challenging circumstances of his appointment. He contended that winning the title this season would represent an ideal moment for O’Neill to exit, and expressed confidence in the manager’s right to be honest about his feelings regarding the permanent position.
Brazil maintained his position, arguing that such declarations should wait until the season concludes rather than being made during an active title race. He suggested a more cautious public stance would be preferable, allowing events to unfold before committing to any definitive statements about the future.
