Rangers secured a 5-1 victory against ten-man Kilmarnock, narrowing the gap to Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership to just three points. The match unfolded in two distinct halves, with the home side initially struggling despite their numerical advantage before ultimately dominating the final thirty minutes.
Kilmarnock’s misery began within four minutes when defender Dom Thompson was sent off for a foul on Alfredo Gassama inside the penalty area. James Tavernier converted the resulting spot-kick, giving Rangers an early lead. Despite the dismissal, the visitors remained competitive throughout the opening period, and Rangers failed to capitalize on their advantage with unconvincing play.
The Ibrox side’s attack lacked cohesion for much of the first half. Bojan Miovski and Thelo Aasgaard offered little impact in their attacking roles, with the midfield struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Kilmarnock even fashioned a genuine chance when Bruce Anderson had a sight at goal but dragged his effort wide, demonstrating their resilience despite being outnumbered.
Rangers’ manager Danny Rohl made five changes to his team following a frustrating 0-0 draw at Hibernian the previous weekend. The adjustments initially appeared ineffective, as the home crowd grew restless before halftime. However, Miovski’s second-half goal sparked Rangers’ dominance, followed by substitute Andreas Skov Olsen adding a third. Oliver Antman and young Mikey Moore completed the rout with late additions.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Rangers’ performance lacked fluidity and conviction for significant periods. The visitors, buoyed by their impressive 3-0 victory over Aberdeen previously, refused to be overwhelmed completely. Greg Kiltie’s late consolation goal represented a small reward for Kilmarnock’s spirited effort against overwhelming odds throughout the ninety minutes.
