Liverpool’s secret New York plans emerge as Slot and Hughes silence critics over teenage sensation Joshua Abe

Liverpool is contemplating another pre-season tour of the United States this summer, with multiple lucrative opportunities being evaluated. The club’s previous American visit in 2024 proved successful commercially, featuring three victories across Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Columbia with strong attendance figures.

Following their recent Asian tour covering Hong Kong and Japan, the Reds are now considering a return to North America. Discussions have reportedly begun with Wrexham regarding a friendly fixture in New York City. The Welsh club, backed by Hollywood investors and currently pursuing Championship promotion, has also held talks with Manchester United and Newcastle about pre-season matches.

Liverpool and Wrexham last met competitively in the 1978 League Cup quarter-final. A New York venue would offer significant commercial appeal, particularly given the World Cup scheduled for North America this summer. The club enjoyed previous success at Yankee Stadium, including a penalty victory over Manchester City in 2014 and a 2-2 draw with Sporting Lisbon in 2019.

Manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes recently participated in a public roundtable discussion addressing criticism they have faced during their tenure. Both individuals have attracted scrutiny in recent months, with Hughes facing questions about transfer strategy despite his summer spending of £450 million. Slot’s season has underperformed expectations, though his league title achievement last year remains significant.

Right-back Conor Bradley suffered serious knee damage at Arsenal last month, with no definitive return date currently established. He underwent a scheduled assessment in Manchester and remains hopeful of returning before the new season begins. New signing Jeremy Jacquet continues adjusting to top-level football while his Rennes side has suffered three consecutive defeats by an aggregate of 9-0 in recent matches.

Striker Jayden Danns would have featured in Slot’s first team had injury permitted, according to the manager. Defender Wellity Lucky, aged 20, is similarly sidelined after sustaining a significant injury. Liverpool’s youth team suffered elimination from the UEFA Youth League after losing 2-1 to Zilina in Slovakia, despite strong performances from emerging talents including Trent Kone-Doherty and Kieran Morrison.

Academy prospect Joshua Abe, only 15, made his Youth League debut as the youngest Reds player to achieve this milestone. Multiple top clubs are reportedly interested in acquiring the young talent, though his best pathway to first-team football likely remains at Liverpool. A ball boy’s quick thinking during the Newcastle match recently contributed to a decisive goal-kick opportunity, earning recognition from goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
