Sean Dyche has been confirmed as the new head coach of Nottingham Forest, stepping into the role shortly after Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal. The club made the announcement on social media, with owner Evangelos Marinakis describing Dyche as the ideal candidate to take over the team. Dyche previously managed Everton, where his tenure was marked by both achievements and controversy.
Dyche took the reins at Everton in January 2023 during a precarious time, as the club faced the real threat of relegation. His efforts saw the Toffees secure their Premier League status, and they recorded an impressive 13 clean sheets in the 2023-24 season, including nine at home. Despite this defensive solidity, Dyche faced criticism for his overall approach and results.
Comparisons have been drawn between Dyche’s style and that of Nottingham Forest’s previous manager, Nuno. While both managers favored lower possession football—Nuno’s Forest averaged 40.9 percent possession in the 2024-25 season—their tactical approaches differ. Dyche prefers direct play, whereas Nuno’s side emphasized rapid transitions. This shift could require an adjustment for Forest’s squad and supporters.
The ability to win crucial games is another aspect of Dyche’s managerial profile. One of his best spells at Everton occurred in the winter of 2023, where the team enjoyed a four-game winning streak, defeating sides such as Chelsea and Forest and keeping four clean sheets. Perhaps most memorably, Dyche’s Everton triumphed over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby in April 2024, showcasing his knack for motivating teams in high-stakes matches.
However, Dyche’s tenure at Everton was not without friction, particularly with the club’s ownership. He was outspoken about his frustrations regarding the financial challenges at Goodison Park, stating in May 2024, “If the [777] takeover doesn’t happen, or a takeover, then it will probably be juggling dust, not sand. I would imagine, because it’s not like there is a pile of cash anywhere, so you’ve got to self-generate… And if you self-generate, how do you get in what you are losing? If someone leaves, how do you get the next one in who is as good as the one leaving? There is no time for development [of young players] because this club hasn’t got time for that.”
At Nottingham Forest, Dyche is unlikely to face the same financial constraints, but his direct personality could present challenges. Marinakis, known for his hands-on management style, could potentially clash with Dyche, who is not shy about expressing his views. The dynamic between the two will be closely watched as Dyche begins his tenure.
As Dyche steps into his new role, questions remain about how his tactics and temperament will mesh with Forest’s ambitions and the club’s leadership. Supporters will be eager to see whether he can replicate his moments of success from Everton and adapt to the demands of a new environment.
