Liverpool manager Arne Slot has come under fire after candidly exposing one of his team’s main weaknesses following a 5-1 Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. The emphatic win marked Liverpool’s return to form after enduring four straight losses in all competitions, including a recent defeat against fierce rivals Manchester United.
On Wednesday, Liverpool delivered their most dominant display of the season, with five different players—Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai—scoring after Rasmus Kristensen’s opener for the hosts. The match was the first time since the Premier League opener that Liverpool had won by more than a single goal, highlighting a shift in momentum for the team.
Despite the impressive result, Slot’s post-match comments drew criticism. Speaking openly about Liverpool’s struggles, he explained, “The biggest exception for me was the playing style of our opponent. We got some energy out of the moments we could press them — in the last four of five games we’ve played we were not able to press the opponent, because the ball wasn’t on the ground. It was through the air.”
Slot’s analysis seemed to point towards recent tactical approaches by teams like Chelsea and Manchester United, who exploited Liverpool’s difficulty dealing with long balls and direct play. His frankness did not sit well with everyone, particularly former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys. Keys commented, “Slot ‘the difference tonight to the way we had to play in our last 4 games is the ball was on the floor.’ What a daft thing to say. Now everybody knows how to beat Liverpool – long balls. They don’t fancy a scrap.”
The reaction among Liverpool supporters was also negative, with many expressing concern that Slot had revealed too much about the team’s vulnerabilities ahead of their upcoming match against Brentford. One fan remarked, “Yeah Arne, it’ll be back in the air on Saturday night,” accompanied by a worried emoji. Another fan questioned, “Isn’t this giving the opponent ammo against you? Now they know playing against your team you’d want ball on the ground so they’ll opt for long balls instead.. I don’t think he thought this through.” A third supporter warned, “Brentford next Arne, brace up for NBA football.”
Liverpool currently sit third in the Premier League table, having secured five wins and suffered three losses in eight matches. They trail Arsenal by four points and are just behind Manchester City. Brentford, their upcoming opponents, are in 13th place but have shown strong recent form, with two wins in their last three games, including victories over Manchester United and West Ham.
As anticipation builds for the Brentford clash, attention is fixed on whether Slot’s openness has handed their rivals an advantage or if Liverpool can adapt to counteract their known weaknesses. The fallout from Slot’s comments has sparked debate about how much managers should reveal about their tactics, especially in the high-stakes world of Premier League football.
